Should the husband be the breadwinner?

my husband has a job. but its sort of contractual. he has off months. his salary is just enough for our basic needs. we can hardly make ends meet. truth is he has potential to land a good stable job but he doesn't want to. he loves what he is doing and refuses to explore other possibilities. i am a stay at home mom because our kid is just a year old. how can i motivate him that we need more than what he makes for savings, child's education,our future?
